Joan PalmerChairperson, Special Olympics North Harbour Special Olympics Upper North Island Councillor Joan's experience in communications and public relations in New Zealand and the UK encompasses radio and television presentation and production, print journalism, and all aspects of public and corporate relations and communications activity. She has several awards for producing effective communications campaigns and for her writing, including the International Television Association (NZ) Silver Monitor Craft Award for Writing Excellence. Her broadcasting career began in Christchurch as one of New Zealand's first (and at 17, youngest) television and radio presenters. Four years later she became presentation announcer for ATV (later known as Central Television), Britain's largest commercial television region serving ten million viewers, and co-produced and hosted major sales promotions for TV advertising campaign launches to principals, sales force and dealers. Following the birth of her first son Joan joined the Birmingham Evening Mail as a part time features writer, specializing in furniture, home decor, fashion, food, shopping, social welfare, volunteer services and television, and ‘moonlighted’ to present and/or direct corporate and promotional videos for clients including Unipart, House of Frazer (Harrods), West Midlands Gas, IBM and Sony. On returning to New Zealand she was appointed Corporate Communications Manager for Databank Systems Ltd to provide all aspects of public relations activity at senior corporate level. Since moving to Auckland she has provided consultancy for a range of corporates, tertiary institutions and businesses. She also makes time for Special Olympics. Specific areas of expertise include:
